Ten female LEARN Journalism Club students writing for Harbingers’ Magazine share their hopes
In Afghanistan, where the Taliban’s restrictions have silenced the dreams of many young girls, a resilient group of students refuses to give up on their aspirations.
Despite being denied access to education, including a recent restriction on being midwives or nurses, these ten determined girls are boldly pursuing their goals, from becoming doctors and business leaders to journalists.
Their stories of perseverance offer a glimpse into a generation of Afghan women determined to shape their own futures – no matter the odds stacked against them. In the face of adversity, their dreams thrive, and their ambition knows no bounds.
These ten young girls are LEARN students who are part of the second cohort of the LEARN Journalism Club and Harbingers’ Magazine collaboration. Below, they share their greatest aspirations.
Harbingers’ Weekly Brief
Aqlima, 16
I aspire to become either a journalist or a teacher, as both professions offer the opportunity to make a significant impact on society. Becoming a teacher would allow me to guide students, help them grow, and influence future leaders. It’s a fulfilling role that goes beyond education, as I would be contributing to the personal and professional development of the next generation.
Journalism, on the other hand, offers an exciting path where I could inform the public, raise awareness, and drive positive change. Journalists have a vital role in keeping society connected and informed by sharing crucial stories and fostering communication.
Both careers provide a way to help society by empowering others and addressing important issues, contributing to progress and positive development.

The question ‘What do you want to be in the future?’ brings different answers from everyone. For me, the answer has always been clear: I want to become a compassionate and successful doctor, specifically a heart surgeon.
This aspiration is not a passing interest, but a passion I am committed to pursuing. I am drawn to this field because of the profound impact it has on people’s lives. Heart surgery offers the opportunity to heal, alleviate suffering, and offer hope. Additionally, I am motivated by a desire to serve my country and be a valuable citizen, using my skills to help my fellow compatriots.
Ghutai, 20
I aspire to become a journalist because I am passionate about understanding global events and informing others. As a journalist, I aim to develop skills such as creative thinking, efficient research, sharp focus, and impactful communication.
My goal in journalism is to uncover hidden truths and amplify voices that need to be heard. Sharing the truth is not only my passion but my purpose. To achieve this, I am committed to overcoming challenges and working independently.
Since childhood, I’ve wanted to be a journalist, eager to learn about global changes and share important information with those who may not be aware. For example, a journalist’s role in warning people about severe storms ensures they are prepared.
Journalism is about more than reporting news – it’s about inspiring others to stay informed, while embodying qualities like respect, patience and integrity, which can make a meaningful difference for those who rely on you.
Hadiya, 17
I aspire to become a heart surgeon because I want to help patients in emergency situations. It’s not just about treating the individuals, but also supporting their families and loved ones.
By helping one patient, I’m helping an entire network of people who care about them. I understand how difficult it is to watch a loved one suffer from heart disease, having experienced this myself. Unfortunately, I lost that person, and this loss inspired me to pursue this path.
However, due to the challenges I face in my country, continuing my education and achieving this dream feels out of reach at the moment.
Mahnaz, 18
I would like to become a surgeon because, in my view, a surgeon’s hands hold not just a scalpel, but the hopes and trust of their patients. The greatest responsibility of a surgeon is to restore the balance between life and suffering.
Every life saved will serve as a testament to my dedication, knowledge, and compassion. As a surgeon, I will embrace the privilege of giving people a second chance at life, making a lasting impact on their well-being and future.
Mahwa, 15
Among the many career paths to choose from, my greatest ambition is to become an accomplished journalist. I am fully aware that this journey is challenging, but I am committed to putting in the effort to succeed.
Journalism is a profession I am passionate about because it plays a crucial role in society, particularly in democratic societies. It informs the public and provides voters with the information needed to make educated decisions. Journalism involves gathering, verifying, and reporting on current events, ideas and people that shape the world.
My interest in journalism is rooted in its power to raise awareness about significant issues, helping the public stay informed and engaged with the world around them.
Malaika, 13
I have many aspirations in life, but above all, I dream of becoming a successful businesswoman. However, my family wishes for me to pursue a career as a doctor. Despite this, my passion for business drives my vision for the future.
I want to be a businesswoman not only for personal success but to make a meaningful impact on society. My goal is to help those in need, particularly impoverished individuals, by creating opportunities and providing support in every way possible. Through my work, I hope to bring happiness and improve the lives of others.
Additionally, I aspire to travel to underprivileged countries to offer assistance to those who need it most. I believe that helping others brings blessings from Allah and leads to true success in life. Through my career, I aim to make a lasting, positive difference in the world.
Nabila, 19
From a young age, I’ve aspired to become a journalist, inspired by figures like Sana Safi, whose unique style and powerful communication skills have greatly influenced me. Journalism, to me, is not just a career – it’s a platform to create meaningful change, particularly for women and girls in my community.
Since 2020, when restrictions on women’s rights intensified, I’ve felt the struggle of my sisters who were denied education and employment. This has driven me to use journalism to raise awareness and advocate for their rights. I aim to provide accurate information, spark important discussions, and guide public opinion for positive change.
My goal is to become a professional journalist, improving society by amplifying the voices of the unheard, especially Afghan women, and advocating for their rights through the power of media.
Sama, 17
I aspire to become a successful businesswoman and build my own company. This dream has been with me since childhood and has become my life’s goal. I would be incredibly proud to become the first businesswoman in my family.
I believe I can make a significant impact on society by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and addressing both local and global challenges. By offering real solutions, supporting sustainable practices, and inspiring others, I can contribute to economic growth and positive social change. For instance, if my company were a fashion brand, I could bring vibrancy to the fashion industry while providing my country with high-quality products.
Zala, 17
I aspire to become a doctor because it is a profession where I can make a real difference in people’s lives. As a doctor, I would diagnose illnesses, treat patients and provide the care they need to recover. This role is vital not only for improving individual health, but also for enhancing the well-being of entire communities. My goal is to save lives, alleviate pain and reduce suffering.
In addition to treating patients, I aim to educate others on maintaining good health and preventing diseases. By promoting healthier lifestyles, I hope to improve the overall health of my community.
Becoming a doctor is my dream because it allows me to serve others and make a meaningful impact on society’s well-being.
