Turkey - Syria earthquake: How to help those in need
On Monday, February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake started in southern and central Turkey with the epicentre in Gaziantep and western Syria.
The earthquake then began to progress and spread over other regions of the affected countries due to its impact. Turkey has one of the most active earthquake zones due to the specific geographical location where three tectonic plates interact.
The earthquake, which was followed by several deadly aftershocks, resulted in a death toll of more than 50,000 and injured “thousands more”.
Immediately the world’s largest funds reacted with money-raising support for the refugees, children who suffered, and to help with the reconstruction of destroyed buildings. Many countries and leading organisations have been offering humanitarian aid to support those in need, with donations helping with emergency disaster relief and long-term recovery for survivors.
UNICEF, which works in over 190 countries and territories to protect children, and Global Giving, a non-profit organisation that provides a worldwide crowdfunding platform, are among them.
On its fundraising page for the disaster, Global Giving said: “Millions of survivors urgently need help. Your donation to the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Relief Fund will provide emergency relief and fuel long-term recovery efforts in Turkey and Syria.”
