Canada defended its title against Australia at the Commonwealth women’s beach volleyball final on the 7th August and won gold.
In the gold medal match, Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes faced Australia’s Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy. After losing their first set 22:24, Canada successfully took the last two sets with 21:17 and 15:12.
The final was very close throughout with small point gaps between teams during the game. There was also a higher frequency of timeouts called in the gold medal match in order to help break the flow of the game. Canada called two timeouts and Australia called three. However, during the bronze medal match, only a total of three timeouts were called between both teams.
Representing Vanuatu in the bronze match was Miller Pata and Sherysyn Toko which saw them defeating New Zealand with 2:1 sets. New Zealand started the match strong with a win of 21:10 in the first set, but in the second set Vanuatu claimed a close victory of 22:20.
This culminated in Vanuatu coming from behind to win with 15:10 in the final set and take bronze. This was Toko’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games and Pata’s second.
“She [Toko] was a hero today and this is her first medal, so I am very proud of her.” said the team captain, Pata, after their win.
The Commonwealth Games occur every four years in locations around the world with the 2022 games held in Birmingham, England. At the 2018 games in Gold Coast, beach volleyball first made its debut in the Commonwealth Games.
Similar to the 2022 games, Pavan and Humana-Paredes won gold in the women’s final against Artacho del Solar and Clancy.
