Why Nepal needs to have a modern, up-to-date education system

14-year-old Samuna asks students and a teacher for their thoughts on Nepal’s education system

Education is the process of garnering knowledge and enhancing the understanding of our lives, which gives us the opportunity to have a prosperous life.

It is an essential thing in life because it helps a person to develop and to discover what they are interested in and what they are good at. This will then allow them to find what roles they want to achieve in society.

In Nepal, the education system is structured into primary, secondary and higher education. In this age of new technologies, it still follows traditional methods of teaching and learning. Technology and skills are extremely critical for this generation, alongside education.

To understand the importance of modern education in Nepal, I interviewed two teenage students and one teacher to get their perspectives on the topic.

Renu Pariyar, 18, is a student at Budhanilkantha Secondary College in Kathmandu. She said the teachers in her school are not able to teach the students in an efficient manner because they lack the knowledge of how today’s kids are growing up with modern technology.

Despite the rapid changes in society, teachers are still using traditional methods of teaching. As a result, Renu believes that Nepal is falling behind other countries in terms of education. She thinks it is extremely important for the country to modernise and start using up-to-date teaching methods.

Paru Tamang, who teaches computing at a government school in Nepal, agrees that modern education is crucial. Children today are using many new technologies.

“Our education system should be modern because if we use technologies in education, then that type of education is going to be enormously impactful to students,” she says.

Binita Nepali, 15, who studies at Kathmandu’s Shree Bal Vikas Samaj Basic School, believes that modern education is essential for technological and skills development. Teachers must prioritise all students and employ cutting-edge techniques.

“Teachers have to teach students by using modern technology. There should be more focus on practical and skills-based education,” she says. “The government has to provide materials to Nepali schools that will help the teacher with their students.”

These arguments and perspectives provide rational reasons as to why modern education is important in Nepal. It can make students competitive with other students and capable of performing proper work. It can help them achieve a successful career and a more fulfilling life.
